The third day of the 2023 Women’s World Cup continued on Tuesday morning with Group E. The Netherlands defeated Vietnam (7-0) and finished at the top of the group. On the other hand, the United States narrowly avoided a disaster but eventually advanced after a draw against Portugal (0-0).
Having a very favorable situation before their match against Vietnam, the Dutch team didn’t hold back and quickly put an end to any suspense. Lieke Martens (8th minute), Katja Snoeijs (11th minute), Esmee Brugts (18th and 57th minutes), Jill Roord (23rd and 83rd minutes), and Daniëlle van de Donk (45th minute) were responsible for inflicting a heavy defeat on the opponents.
This victory allowed the Oranje team to accumulate 7 points at the end of the group stage, finishing at the top of Group E. In the round of sixteen, they will face the second-placed team from Group G (Sweden, Italy, South Africa, Argentina). The other qualifier from this group is the United States.
Despite being favorites to finish first in the group, the American team narrowly advanced to the second round. Facing Portugal, the reigning world champions were held to a goalless draw. They even came close to being eliminated when the Portuguese player Ana Capeta hit the post in the final moments of the match (90th +1 minute). Team USA is almost certain to face Sweden, who is leading their group by a wide margin, in the round of sixteen.
