In his unique style, former US President Donald Trump has reacted to the elimination of the American women’s team in the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup, via social media.
Last Sunday, the United States exited the 2023 Women’s World Cup in the round of 16. The reigning world champions, after a goalless draw, were defeated in a penalty shootout against Sweden (4-5). The premature elimination received widespread criticism in the United States. Among the flood of reactions regretting the USA’s exit, the comments from former President Donald Trump were particularly harsh.
On the social media platform (Truth Social), Trump made highly critical comments, directed not only at Megan Rapinoe for her missed penalty, but also at the current president, Joe Biden, and more generally, certain ideas associated with social sensitivity (wokeness).
“The ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ loss of the US women’s football team against Sweden is a full emblem of what is happening to our once great nation under Joe Biden. Many of our players were openly hostile to America. No other country has behaved in such a way. Wokeness equals failure. Nice shot, Megan, the USA is going to hell!!!” he wrote. A familiar refrain from the businessman.
