In a press conference on Tuesday, Rigobert Song unveiled the list of players selected for the September camp, which corresponds to the sixth round of qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. And the Cameroon head coach justified André Onana’s presence in his squad.
Less than a year after his international retirement, which he announced following his suspension from the national team for insubordination during the 2022 World Cup, André Onana returns to the Lions Indomptables camp. The Manchester United goalkeeper has been called up for the September camp, which is part of the sixth round of qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The 27-year-old goalkeeper is indeed among the 24 players selected by the national coach Rigobert Song for the match against Burundi on September 9th.
During the press conference on Tuesday, Rigobert Song was asked about the reasons behind his decision to include the services of the former Inter Milan goalkeeper. “There has never been a problem with André Onana. I have always said that it depended on him. He knew what he had to do. If he is on the list, it means he has done what he needed to do. Today, we are satisfied with his return. He (Onana) is currently one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and I congratulate him for that,” he justified in front of the media.
Currently second in Group C with 4 points, Cameroon is neck and neck with Burundi, which also has 4 points. A draw would allow the Lions Indomptables to secure their ticket for the journey to Ivory Coast.
