The Cambodian Parliament officially confirmed the election of 45-year-old Hun Manet as Prime Minister on Tuesday. He thus takes the reins of the country after nearly four decades of his father’s rule.

After years of preparation and political positioning, Hun Manet has finally reached the pinnacle of power in Cambodia. The son of former Prime Minister Hun Sen, who ruled the country with an iron fist for nearly forty years, Hun Manet faces the immense task of continuing economic development while addressing the growing democratic aspirations of the population.

Political observers highlight that this transition marks a significant shift in the country’s political direction. While his father was often criticized for his authoritarian governance and human rights abuses, Hun Manet appears to be moving towards a more open and transparent approach. In his inaugural speech, the new Prime Minister pledged to work closely with international partners and uphold democratic principles.

However, Hun Manet also inherits complex challenges, including poverty reduction, combating endemic corruption, and strengthening democratic institutions. Cambodia is at a pivotal moment in its history, where the expectations of youth and civil society for reforms are stronger than ever.
