The commissioner of the Hêvié district police station is in the eye of the storm. The residents for whom he is responsible for ensuring security are dissatisfied following a police blunder for which one of his officers is allegedly responsible.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim and two other youths were riding on a motorcycle. However, upon sighting the police officers, the victim jumped off the motorcycle, reportedly to avoid police harassment on his fellow riders. Unfortunately for him, he became the target of the police, who shot him.
This version of events, as recounted by the victim’s companions, is dismissed by the police, who claim there was an exchange of gunfire between them and the alleged robbers.
Thus, the circumstances that led to this police blunder remain unclear. However, the case has been entrusted to the judiciary, which is conducting an investigation to shed light on the matter.
In the face of the ongoing tension, Honorable Nathanaël SOKPOÉKPÉ, a member of the National Assembly and a native of Hêvié, urges the population to remain calm and to trust in the justice system of their country.
