Teams from the Ministry of Trade’s inspection department have proceeded to the closure of several domestic gas distribution shops in the Mono and Couffo departments. Several offenses, including the abusive increase in price, are being attributed to the individuals involved.
Around ten domestic gas sales points have been sealed in various localities in the Mono and Couffo departments, as reported by La Nation. The shops in question are accused of engaging in price gouging. According to the Departmental Director of Industry and Commerce (Dpic), these sales points deliberately and whimsically raised the price of domestic gas.
According to her statements, the prices in the market have risen compared to the official price. She emphasized that domestic gas is fixed at 795 CFA francs per kilogram. In line with this price, the small 6 kg bottle should be sold at 4,770 CFA francs per kilogram and the large 12.5 kg bottle at 9,937.5 CFA francs.
But the market trend goes against this logic. Today, Beninese people are purchasing the small 6 kg bottle at a price ranging from 5,000 to 8,000 CFA francs depending on the geographic area. This significant increase in gas prices has caused concern among the population, especially for low-income households that heavily depend on this fuel for their cooking needs.
