Benin: Sanctioning directors with 0% in the CEP exam – Salimane Karimou intends to rectify the measure
The Minister of Preschool and Primary Education, Salimane Karimou, noted shortcomings in the measure aimed at sanctioning school directors who obtained 0% in the Primary School Certificate (CEP) examination.
After a few years of implementation, the measure to sanction public school administrators with a 0% pass rate in the CEP exam will be subject to evaluation. The announcement was made by the Minister of Preschool and Primary Education, Salimane Karimou, during a press meeting on July 28 in Porto-Novo.
According to the authority, it has been observed that the measure had shortcomings because not all parameters were considered in its implementation.
“In some areas, people started using it for settling personal scores. I received a request from a director who was relieved of duty. This case struck me, and he said we need to think differently,” the authority told the press.
According to the minister’s statements, this director was relieved of duty due to underperformance, even though his students did not even take the exam.
“We already relieved him of duty because he got 0%. We didn’t know that the children he presented didn’t even take the exam. But because we saw 0%, we relieved him. But he wrote to say that the children did not take the exam,” the authority explained.
According to him, there are practices at this school that he came to correct, which didn’t sit well with the parents’ association. They organized to prevent the children from participating in the CEP exam to have the director sanctioned.
Given the shortcomings of the measure, Minister Salimane Karimou has decided to evaluate it to make it fairer.
