The rising waters of the Ouémé and Niger rivers are already causing damage in the Collines region and the northern part of Benin.

In the Tchaourou Commune, the overflowing water from its course has already caused significant damage in its path. The flooding has left many homeless, who are crying out for help from the authorities in the municipality.

According to the delegate from Bétérou, who spoke to the regional ORTB channel, vast expanses of agricultural fields have also been destroyed by this flooding, plunging farmers into despair.

“There’s soybean, yam as well that we’re seeing that we won’t even be able to find the seeds for next year. We take loans for these crops. There are mahogany trees that spread up to 10 hectares that are already inundated,” a despairing farmer confided.

It’s worth noting that the flooding caused by the rising Ouémé River has already resulted in two deaths and significant material damage in Tchaourou. Both deceased individuals are children.

People displaced by the water are being temporarily hosted by others who are offering them hospitality while awaiting local authorities to set up makeshift shelters.
