A canoe carrying several dozens of passengers from Malanville (Benin) to Gaya (Niger) is missing. The canoe set out on the water during the night from Thursday, August 17 to Friday, August 18, 2023.
At the moment, available information does not allow us to determine exactly what happened to the canoe. According to the local radio station Sota Fm, as reported by Fraternité Fm, the canoe has disappeared from radar and remains untraceable for now.
According to Fraternité Fm, search and rescue efforts have been underway for several hours to locate the canoe. However, no news is currently available.
The municipality of Malanville borders Gaya, a locality in Niger. Human trafficking between the two localities is quite common. Despite the border closures due to the ECOWAS sanctions against Niger, people are still managing to move between the two areas using alternative routes.
