Former ambassador Moïse KEREKOU has expressed his thoughts in an article published on his Facebook page regarding the various stances adopted by ECOWAS in response to the coup that took place in Niger.

In his analysis, Moïse KEREKOU believes that the political crisis in Niger has exposed a subregional body that is grappling with a series of crises. “The various sparks ignited by the military have shed light on an ECOWAS that, to put it in another way, is more than ever confronted with a series of crises: a crisis of authority, a crisis of legitimacy, a crisis of confidence, and an institutional crisis. What is the cause of this?” he questioned in his article.

As a pan-Africanist, intellectual, elite, and also a specialist in integration matters (The process of integration in Africa – African Union weak institutions, 2010 / African Union and the integration process, 2011), I cannot remain indifferent to these political and soon-to-be social upheavals that will undoubtedly have economic consequences.

“I must,” he continues, “provide some insight.” The former Beninese diplomat now observes that democracies are being tested by coups, and armies are taking pleasure in leaving their barracks while, as joyful spectators, the people applaud and seem to be satisfied with this situation.

“Together, we will try to understand and appreciate these major changes through a series of objective reflections that I am pleased to share with you,” he writes in his article.

With this analysis of the crisis affecting the West African subregion, Moïse Kérékou plans to delve into a series of publications covering topics such as the creation of modern states in Africa; the heavy colonial legacy; democracy being tested by coups, and history stammers but does not repeat itself.
