After issuing a warning, the High Authority of Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC) has taken action by sanctioning the media group “La Gazette du Golfe”. The institution had cautioned media outlets against promoting coup d’état, in light of the ongoing heated situation in Niger.

“All communication means of the media group ‘La Gazette du Golfe’ (Golfe Television, Golfe FM, the weekly ‘Gazette du Golfe,’ and their digital channels) are suspended until further notice.” This is essentially the decision issued by the HAAC on August 8, 2023, against the media group “La Gazette du Golfe.”

To justify the sanction, the HAAC states in its decision that the media outlet violated “the provisions of articles 29, 36, 211 of the Code of Information and Communication, as well as the provisions of articles 2 and 10 of the Code of Ethics of the Beninese press and the provisions of agreements signed with the HAAC.”

The HAAC also referred to its statement urging media professionals to demonstrate professionalism and to scrupulously respect constitutional and legal provisions in handling information related to the promotion of coup d’état in Africa and the sub-region.
