Rumors have been circulating for a few days. Former MP Atao Hinnouho is said to be ready to return home after being evacuated for medical reasons authorized by the court since 2019.
Will Atao Hinnouho soon be back in Benin? Information gathered from sources close to the former MP strengthens the theory of an imminent return, although they refrained from giving details about the exact date or period. There is even a mobilization underway to give him a warm welcome.
Arrested and imprisoned in 2018, Atao Hinnouho was sentenced to 5 years in prison and a fine of 3 billion CFA francs for customs fraud in a case involving the trafficking of counterfeit medicines. He was also sentenced to one year in prison for rebellion in the same “counterfeit medicines” case.
After being hospitalized at the National University Hospital Center Hubert Koutoukou Maga (CNHU) in Cotonou, under police surveillance, the former MP was granted a medical evacuation in 2019. The court allowed him to seek treatment abroad. Since then, he has not publicly given any updates.
His former political party Reso Atao, which was in the opposition, later joined the ruling coalition before disbanding due to the reform of the party system.
