While we all love the cool weather that comes with Harmattan, we can agree that we don’t love how it leaves our skin and lips dry. It’s important to stay hydrated and protected from the harmful effects of Harmattan on the skin.

In Africa, Harmattan brings a semblance of cold weather. This season is characterized by very dry, cold winds in the morning and evening, warm daytime temperatures, and laden with dust particles that particularly dry out the skin. This period is associated with various ailments such as dry skin, damaged hands and feet, chapped lips, tightness in the face, and brittle hair. Discover how to take care of your face during this period.

The face is the most affected part of the body, as it cannot be covered by clothing. It is directly exposed to the wind, dust, microbes, and pollution. Just observe the eyelashes turning yellow-orange after a motorcycle ride to imagine the amount absorbed by the skin. Not only does it tingle, tighten, and dry out, but it also becomes infested with dust and dirt.

The solution is to always thoroughly cleanse the face in the evening as part of your routine. Makeup removal is essential even if you do not wear makeup. Finish this step by washing your face with a cleansing agent. Avoid harsh soaps and foams that dry out the face. Opt for natural cleansers rich in oil (in Benin, for example, palm oil soap). Or choose gentle cleansing foams available in pharmacies.

Finish your routine with a richer face cream than usual. Another tip is to apply a little oil (sweet almond, jojoba, olive…), or a dollop of shea butter on the face. Softness and hydration guaranteed!
