FC Barcelona unveiled its away jersey for the upcoming season on Wednesday morning. The all-white kit is seen as a provocation towards Real Madrid.
FC Barcelona is at the center of controversy in Spain due to its 2023-2024 away jersey. The kit, revealed by the Catalans on Wednesday, is entirely white with blue shorts, reminiscent of the historical jersey of their Madrid rivals. In the Iberian Peninsula, this Barça jersey is considered a provocation towards Real Madrid.
In an official statement on their website, the reigning La Liga champions explained, “FC Barcelona presents its second jersey for the 2023/24 season, which features an innovative design and pays tribute to Johan Cruyff, a pioneer of Barça’s playing style. Taking reference from the second jersey that the Barça team wore in the 1970s, white is the absolute protagonist. However, it still retains the Barça colors’ stripes on the edges of the sleeves.”
Indeed, Johan Cruyff was the last legend to don the white Barça jersey during a match between Aston Villa and Barcelona (2-2) in the 1977-78 UEFA Cup. At that time, the Catalan club frequently played in white during its European matches until the late 1970s when yellow became dominant for the away kits. When asked about the possible provocation towards Real Madrid, the president of Barça responded, “I don’t think so; it’s not done with that intention. It’s an idea, a more commercial theme, as we have had jerseys of all colors. We believe that a color should not be anyone’s legacy. In any case, it’s a white Barça.”
