CAF announced on Tuesday the date of the draw for the first edition of the African Super League, renamed the African Football League (AFL). The competition will take place from October 20th to November 11th.
Banned in Europe, the highly controversial Super League in its African version will indeed take place. The first edition of this continental tournament, reserved for the biggest African clubs, will be held from October 20th to November 11th, 2023. The competition, renamed the African Football League (AFL), was initially planned to take place in August but the start date was eventually postponed.
And already, CAF is working towards the success of this tournament, dear to President Patrice Motsepe. The pan-African organization announced on Tuesday the date of the draw for this African league. The draw ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 2nd, 2023, at 4:00 PM GMT. The chosen location to host this premier event is the city of Cairo, Egypt, the headquarters of CAF.
The pots for the African Super League draw The African Football League will start with only 8 teams from 8 different countries: Al Ahly from Egypt, Esperance Tunis from Tunisia, Wydad Casablanca from Morocco, Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa, Simba from Tanzania, TP Mazembe from DR Congo, Horoya from Guinea, and Petro Atletico from Angola.
They are divided into two pots of four clubs each, based on their performances in CAF competitions in recent years. The highly competitive Pot 1 consists solely of teams that have already won the African Champions League.
