Following the Elephants’ victory in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara congratulated them.
The curtains have come down on the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 on the evening of Sunday, February 11, 2024. Ivory Coast emerged as champions of Africa for the third time in their history. The Elephants defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria (2-1) in a highly spirited final. Franck Kessié and Sébastien Haller were the scorers for Ivory Coast, while William Trust-Ekong netted Nigeria’s lone goal.
Following the home victory of the Ivorian team, President Alassane Ouattara, overjoyed, did not hesitate to express his joy. He also took the opportunity to congratulate the national team. “We are the Champions of Africa! What happiness! Bravo, bravo, bravo to our Elephants! Thank you for this third star given to the Nation! We are proud of you,” wrote the Head of State.
It is worth noting that Ivory Coast has distinguished itself on the African continent by adding a third victory to its record after those achieved in 1992 and 2015. The team, led by Emerse Faé, displayed remarkable resilience throughout the tournament, recovering brilliantly after their 4-0 defeat to the Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea in their last group stage match.
