Nigeria secured a goalless draw against Canada in their first match at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, taking place in Australia and New Zealand.
Although they would have preferred to start with a win, the Super Falcons didn’t begin the 2023 Women’s World Cup with a defeat. The Nigerian team fought to a goalless draw against Canada on Thursday in their opening match of Group B.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie shone by saving a penalty from Christine Sinclair. Despite Canada’s clear dominance, the Super Falcons held firm but had to finish the match with ten players after Deborah Abiodun was sent off late in the game.
Nigeria’s next challenge will be to build on this point against Australia, who secured a victory against Ireland. As hosts of the competition, the Australian team clinched their first three points against Ireland with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a penalty goal by Steph Catley. Meanwhile, Canada will seek to bounce back against the Ireland team.
