Togo received significant financial support from the World Bank on Thursday to accelerate the implementation of its ambitious and innovative social program known as ASTRE (Transformative Social Assistance for Resilience).
In Togo, a financing agreement for an impressive amount of 100 million US dollars, approximately 60 billion CFA francs, was formally signed during an official ceremony in Lomé on Thursday, July 20. This strategic partnership between the Togolese government and the Bretton Woods Institution opens new perspectives to combat extreme poverty and vulnerability affecting a significant part of the population.
The Minister of Economy and Finance, Sani Yaya, emphasized the importance of this funding, stating that the recently adopted non-contributory national social protection program by the government truly focuses on improving the quality of life of the most disadvantaged citizens in the country.
On her part, Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira, the new World Bank Country Director for Togo, expressed her satisfaction with this partnership, highlighting that this financial support demonstrates the Bank’s commitment to accompany countries in their efforts towards sustainable and inclusive development.
The ASTRE program stands out for its innovative and integrated approach aimed at providing enhanced social protection to vulnerable populations while fostering their resilience to economic and environmental challenges. This funding will enable the implementation of concrete measures to fight precariousness, provide equitable access to basic services such as healthcare and education, and promote sustainable economic opportunities for all.
In addition to its direct impact on the well-being of Togolese people, this ambitious social program will also contribute to stimulating economic growth and strengthening the country’s social stability. By investing in human capital and promoting social inclusion, Togo is positioning itself on the path of sustainable and equitable development for all its citizens.
