Casserole concerts took place on Saturday evening in Dakar, following the call of the Senegalese opposition Ousmane Sonko to loudly protest against the ban on his presidential nomination meeting for 2024.

Casserole concerts rang out on the evening of Saturday, July 15, in Dakar and in several localities, at the call of the opponent Ousmane Sonko. A candidate in the 2024 presidential election, he intended by this demonstration to protest against the ban on his nomination meeting, scheduled for the afternoon, for “risks of disturbances to public order”.

Ousmane Sonko is blocked by security forces at his home in Dakar, held captive according to him, since May 28. The opponent was sentenced on June 1 to two years in prison in a case of morals, a verdict that makes him ineligible in the state, according to his lawyers and jurists.

He was also sentenced on May 8 to six months in prison with a suspended sentence during an appeal trial for defamation, a sentence widely perceived as making him ineligible for the presidency. But he has not yet exhausted his appeals to the Supreme Court.

Ousmane Sonko affirmed on Friday evening in a statement that he “remains eligible”, accusing President Sall of “plotting” to exclude him from the presidential election. Macky Sall defends himself. Elected in 2012 for seven years and re-elected in 2019 for five years, he declared on July 3 that he is not a candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
