Togo received a major financial support from the World Bank on Thursday to accelerate the implementation of its ambitious and innovative social program known as “ASTRE” (Transformative Social Assistance for Resilience).
In Togo, a funding agreement of an impressive amount of 100 million US dollars, approximately 60 billion CFA francs, was formally signed during an official ceremony in Lomé on Thursday, July 20. This strategic partnership between the Togolese government and the World Bank opens new prospects for combating extreme poverty and vulnerability affecting a significant portion of the population.
The Minister of Economy and Finance, Sani Yaya, emphasized the importance of this funding, stating that the recently adopted non-contributory national social protection program by the government truly focuses on improving the quality of life of the country’s most disadvantaged citizens.
On the other hand, Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira, the new World Bank Country Director for Togo, expressed her satisfaction with this partnership, highlighting that this financial support demonstrates the Bank’s commitment to supporting countries in their efforts for sustainable and inclusive development.
The ASTRE program stands out for its innovative and integrated approach, aiming to provide strengthened social protection to vulnerable populations while promoting their resilience to economic and environmental challenges. This funding will enable the implementation of concrete measures to combat precariousness, offer equitable access to basic services such as healthcare and education, and promote sustainable economic opportunities for all.
In addition to its direct impact on the well-being of Togolese citizens, this ambitious social program will also contribute to stimulating economic growth and enhancing the country’s social stability. By investing in human capital and promoting social inclusion, Togo positions itself on the path of sustainable and equitable development for all its citizens.
