On Sunday, July 16, 2023, Djahid Zefizef announced his resignation from the presidency of the Algerian Football Federation in a video broadcast on the official FAF website. The successor to Charaf-Eddine Amara, the Algerian leader remained at the head of the governing body for only twelve months.

In a video posted by the FAF, Djahid Zefizef explained the reason for his resignation: “I ran for a position on the CAF Comex. It was one of my main goals. We spared no effort to achieve it. Unfortunately, it was not enough to win a position on the Comex. Thus, I inform the public that I am resigning from my position as president of the Algerian football federation.”

Continuing his account to thank the country’s high authorities, he adds: “I take this opportunity to thank the high authorities of the country for the great support they have given me since my election to the head of the FAF. I also thank everyone who trusted me. I wish good luck to Algerian football. Long live Algeria and glory to our martyrs.”

Less than a year after his arrival at the head of the FAF, Djahid Zefizef was pushed out. His lightning-fast mandate, punctuated notably by the appointment of Mustapha Biskri as Technical Director, definitively ended following the humiliation received during the elections for the CAF executive committee. Beaten by his Libyan opponent, Zefizef had since been caught in the crossfire of criticism.

A defeat with enormous consequences for Algeria, a candidate to host the CAN 2025, now absent from the CAF Comex which will be responsible for designating the host country, the chances of Algeria are dwindling in any case.
