At least nine people lost their lives in an attack that occurred Sunday night in Bamenda, the capital of the Anglophone region of Northwest Cameroon, which has been ravaged by the Anglophone crisis since October 2016.
According to Colonel Serge Cyrille Atonfack Nguemo, Director of Communication at the Ministry of Defense, the secessionists opened fire without warning on the patrons of a bar, resulting in the death of nine people. Two other individuals were seriously injured in this brutal attack.
The governor of the Northwest, Adolphe Lele Lafrique, confirmed the facts, emphasizing that armed men stormed a bar in the Nacho-Junction neighborhood in Bamenda, indiscriminately shooting at the patrons present.
The attack has not yet been claimed, but the Ministry of Defense accuses the Anglophone separatists, dressed in military uniform, of being the perpetrators. Colonel Atonfack Nguemo stated that the defense and security forces are committed to hunting down these criminals to their last stronghold.
The Anglophone region of Cameroon, comprising the Northwest and Southwest, is the epicenter of the Anglophone crisis that has been raging for several years. According to the 2022 Human Rights Watch report, this crisis has already resulted in the death of at least 4,000 civilians, victims of both the defense and security forces and armed groups since October 2016. Local populations are the main victims of this conflict, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.
