Ghana: The daughter of President Nana Akufo-Addo was caught on camera talking on the phone during the national anthem commemorating the 30th anniversary of the death of Eleanor Akufo-Addo, the late wife of the president and mother of Edwina. The video sparked reactions on social media.
The video circulated on Ghanaian social media platforms. During the national anthem commemorating the 30th anniversary of Eleanor Akufo-Addo’s death, Edwina was filmed talking on the phone right next to her father. The young woman was engaged in a lively conversation with the person on the other end of the line, while the crowd observed the traditional “one-minute silence” in honor of the late wife of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The video prompted numerous reactions, particularly as it followed a recent incident in which President Akufo-Addo expressed his dissatisfaction with Nii Torgbor Obodai Ampaw, the chief of Mempeasem, for not standing up during the national anthem.
This specific incident occurred on Friday, June 9, 2023, during the Green Ghana Day event held at the University of Ghana. The footage showed Akufo-Addo angrily ordering the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, to instruct the traditional chief to stand up. His anger stemmed from the fact that everyone, including himself as the country’s first gentleman, had stood up in honor of the national anthem, except Nii Torgbor Obodai Ampaw.
Later, the chief of Mempeasem issued a statement apologizing to the president and explained that his inability to stand up for the national anthem was due to poor health and the side effects of medication.
