Former Ivorian international, Bonaventure Kalou, has revealed his favorites for the final phase of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place from January 13th to February 11th, 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire.

In just over five months, the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations will begin. The 34th edition of the continental tournament will be held from January 13th to February 11th, 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire. A three-week tournament to determine the successor of Senegal, the reigning champions and contenders for their own title defense.

In an interview with Afrik-Foot, former Ivorian international, Bonaventure Kalou, revealed his top four favorites for the ultimate victory. The former Elephants striker and current mayor of Vavoua sees the Ivory Coast among the top contenders alongside three African giants. “I would say Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast,” he stated.

Kalou also commented on Ivory Coast’s chances of winning the competition on home soil. As the host nation, Ivory Coast is automatically qualified, but their performances have not been reassuring as they are also competing in the qualifiers for the tournament. Ivory Coast was crushed by Zambia (0-3) in June during the fifth round of qualifying.

However, Bonaventure Kalou is not worried. “Worried? No. It’s a wake-up call for those who already saw themselves as too good and at a high level. Football reminds us that we must show a lot of humility, respect our opponents, and constantly question ourselves,” justified the former PSG player. “Being good today doesn’t necessarily mean we will be as good tomorrow. Being good in a Champions League or European league match does not guarantee that we will be good in African Cup matches. It’s a good wake-up call for everyone to reassess themselves. It helps to mobilize everyone and start off on the right foot.”
