Former Manchester United footballer and ex-Wales manager, Ryan Giggs, will not face a new trial for an allegation of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. The British prosecution announced on Tuesday the dropping of charges against the former Red Devils defender.
British justice has ordered the charges against Ryan Giggs, accused of domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend and her sister in 2020, to be dropped. The two women had accused the former Wales national team coach of violently attacking his then-partner, Kate Greville, and her sister Emma, causing injuries to Kate’s elbow and lips.
Giggs had previously been tried in August last year and pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, a new trial was scheduled for the end of July 2023.
Ultimately, the British prosecution decided to abandon the proceedings against the Welshman during a preliminary hearing held on Tuesday at Manchester Crown Court. Ryan Giggs “is deeply relieved that the charges have finally come to an end after almost three years of fighting to clear his name,” said his lawyer, Chris Daw, following the hearing.
