In northern Togo, at least 12 soldiers were killed on Monday, July 17, in an attack on a military position in Kpendjal, located in the Savanes Region.
Yet another terrorist attack has occurred in Togo, in the municipality of Kpendjal, near the border with Burkina Faso. Local media report that the attack took place in the village of Sankortchagou, located in the Koundjoaré canton, in Kpendjal 1 municipality, approximately 12 km northwest of the region.
The Defense and Security Forces, engaged in an operation called “Coup de poing” (Blow), were traveling in six jeeps when they were violently targeted by heavily armed terrorists who had set up an ambush.
Unfortunately, the attack resulted in the loss of twelve brave Togolese soldiers. In addition to the loss of life, there were also reported injuries, and the wounded were evacuated to the Regional Hospitals in Dapaong, as reported by the media outlet IciLomé.
It is worth noting that the northern region of Togo, commonly known as the Savanes, faces a persistent threat posed by jihadist groups. Aware of this security reality, the competent authority has decided to take firm measures to protect the region. Thus, on June 13, 2022, a state of security emergency was declared, marking the beginning of a three-month period of intensified security operations.
Following a thorough assessment of the situation, the Togolese National Assembly recently approved a proposed law to extend this state of emergency for an additional six-month period.
