Declared not guilty of rape and attempted rape last week, Benjamin Mendy has found a club in France. The French defender has signed with FC Lorient. It was far from the only destination that presented itself to the former Monaco player.

One week after being cleared of rape and attempted rape charges by the British justice system, a legal process that lasted several years, Benjamin Mendy is set to return to the football pitch. The French defender has signed with FC Lorient in Ligue 1.

The club from Brittany made this somewhat surprising announcement in a statement on their official website. “FC Lorient is pleased to announce today the signing of French international left-back Benjamin Mendy for two seasons,” the Breton club proudly stated.

It’s a somewhat risky gamble for the Merlus to acquire a player who hasn’t played competitive football for nearly three years. However, the French club was not the only one interested in the services of the French international. The former AS Monaco player was reportedly sought after by two Premier League clubs and a team from the Greek Super League. According to information from Foot Mercato, the clubs are Nottingham Forest, Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, and Olympiakos.

These destinations apparently did not interest the 29-year-old left-back, who preferred a return to Ligue 1 to revive his career. The question now is whether he will achieve the same success as during his illustrious spell at Monaco, where he shone before being signed by Manchester City.
