An escaped lion puts Berlin authorities on alert. The wild animal is reportedly roaming freely in the German capital. The police are urging residents to stay at home.
Berlin police issued a warning late Wednesday night, stating that a large predator, likely a lioness, was on the loose in the southern suburbs of Berlin. “Please avoid leaving your homes due to a wild animal escaped in the Kleinmachnow, Teltow & Stahnsdorf area,” this message was broadcasted via the phones of some Berliners and through loudspeakers.
Through social media and vehicles equipped with loudspeakers, residents in the area were advised not to leave their homes and to keep their pets indoors. Authorities spoke to German radio RBB and stated, “There have been various visual contacts, so we assume at the moment that a lioness is freely roaming.” A video is circulating on social media showing the animal, and the absence of a mane could confirm that it is indeed a female.
The origin of the animal is still unclear, and the police explained to German radio that “neither animal parks, zoos, nor circuses have reported a missing animal matching the description.” A large-scale search operation has been launched by the police and firefighters. If the feline is located, it will be tranquilized and taken to a dedicated animal welfare facility.
