A few days after assuming her position as the new Operations Director for Togo and three other countries in the region, Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira has embarked on a three-day official visit to the Togolese capital.
Rwandan national Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira, the new Operations Director for Togo, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Guinea, arrived in Lomé, the capital of Togo, on Wednesday as part of a working visit. This visit, scheduled from Wednesday, July 19 to Friday, July 21, 2023, provides a unique opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the World Bank and Togo and to discuss key priorities of her mandate.
During her visit, the Operations Director will meet with high-level Togolese authorities to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between Togo and the World Bank. Discussions will cover a variety of topics, including ongoing development initiatives, economic challenges facing the country, and opportunities for future collaboration.
A significant moment of the visit will be the signing of financing agreements for the Transformative Social Assistance for Resilience (ASTRE) program. This program aims to strengthen social safety nets and promote the resilience of vulnerable communities in the face of economic and climate shocks. The World Bank is committed to supporting Togo in its efforts to reduce poverty and foster inclusive development.
Additionally, Ms. Uwanyiligira will visit the field to observe the concrete achievements of the West Africa Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project (WACA). This project aims to enhance the resilience of coastal communities to the adverse effects of climate change and coastal erosion. The field visit will allow the Operations Director to witness the progress made and understand the challenges faced by local communities.
