The 3-year transition proposed by General Tiani is not favored by ECOWAS, which insists on the swift restoration of power to Mohamed Bazoum. Following the announcement made on Saturday, August 19th by the President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Nation (CNSP), ECOWAS has expressed its disagreement.
In Niger, the military is prepared to hand over power to civilians in 3 years. This proposal is aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the crisis, but ECOWAS remains steadfast in its position. ECOWAS does not accept any extended transition in the region. “They must prepare to hand over the reins as soon as possible,” said Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, in an interview with the BBC.
According to Abdel-Fatau Musah, the CNSP should not contemplate a prolonged stay at the helm of Niger. The ECOWAS Commissioner stated that the coup leaders must quickly relinquish power and focus on the security challenges falling under their jurisdiction.
He indicated that the planned military intervention is still on the table. The different teams are gradually getting ready and awaiting the final decision to remove the junta.
